Being a new mom I guess I always expected breast feeding to just come naturally, and I would be able to nurse my baby as long as she needed me to. No one ever told me that it would be one of the hardest things I've had to do being a new mom, and its definitely not something that comes naturally to me! I know there are moms out there that feed perfectly, and also have some left over to keep a nice stash in the freezer. I wish I could say that was me but its not.
The first month or so I was doing really well breast feeding. Cece was latching great, and I was feeding her enough that I also had some extra that I could pump and store away. Around 2 months it almost seemed overnight that I wasn't able to feed her as much as she wanted. She was sucking me dry on both sides and cranky as can be after! I had no idea what was wrong with her. I thought she was getting enough because she had always been satisfied before so I didn't think that feeding was the problem. once I suspected that she may not be getting enough food I tried everything to get my milk supply up and nothing seemed to help. I tried pumping every two hours, mothers milk tea, making sure I drank tons of water etc. I was going crazy, and was constantly in a state of stress because I couldn't get her to stop crying. Finally one night I had enough and I decided to try to give her some extra formula after I nursed her because she was screaming and I couldn't get her to stop. I had only fed her an extra ounce of formula after nursing her and it gave her the extra little top off she needed! She stopped crying, seemed satisfied, and slept so good that night! After that I started nursing her on both sides and then giving her a 2 ounce bottle after and she is a completely new baby! She sleeps better, is content after eating, and just overall a more calm and a wonderful baby!
While nursing Cece, I was in dire need of a good bra that was comfortable, soft, and convenient. We were lucky enough to find Cake Maternity and both Ashlyn and I got some amazing nursing bras! This bra is awesome because there is a clip that you can undo to remove a flap that is over your nipple area so you are able to quickly make yourself available to your little one when they are screaming in hunger. It also doesn't expose your whole breast so you can feel comfortable feeding in public without feeling like your exposing yourself to the whole world. BTW, I admire the moms who are comfortable enough to just whip it out in public! When your baby needs it, you've gotta provide it! I feel like I'm always scrambling to find an extra room or area where I can find some privacy. Maybe with the more babies I have, the more comfortable I will get.
I think being a mom is so important, and it is so amazing because only you know your baby best, and only YOU can deicide what is best for you baby. I know theres a stigma out there that women should only breast feed if they are able to and its not good to supplement with formula, but based on my own experience with my own baby I say do what ever you feel as a mother is right for your baby! I know my baby is 100 times happier when she gets enough food and formula has been the only option for me to make sure that happens.
